I listened to this book after watching the movie to see the larger story. Even if the movie adaptation is faithful to the book, they have to cut a lot of content to meet the length of a movie.
The book has amazing character development and depth revolving around pop culture. We get to see the world the individual players created with their enthusiasm and community. The book also gets very real about the state of the world, and the seemingly disgusting habits it takes for someone to stay in their room all day playing the game.
