The Planet Pirates – Anne McCaffrey – Coauthors Elizabeth Moon and Jody Nye

About a week ago I finished Anne McCaffrey’s Planet Pirates trilogy. Now I read Sassinak first, book two by sequence but book one by publication date. When I tried to buy the rest of the series, I learned that the author added a book that runs before Sassinak’s timeframe. Now despite that the book shown below orders the books by The Death of Sleep, Sassinak, and Generation Warriors. I found that reading Sassinak first was best.

I say this because Sassinak ends with Sassinak meeting her great great great…. grandmother who is younger than her. Sassinak saves her from a planet where she was trapped in “cold sleep”, or stasis, while on her search for the pirates. While The Death of Sleep ends when Luzie, her grandmother, goes into that cold sleep.

So, book two, Sassinak, shows how the two storylines merge, while the first book does not. And both book’s timeframes run parallel in a way, so one does not HAVE to read it in a particular order. But by reading Sassinak first, you can read book one and wonder the whole time how these two stories are going to merge to specifically at the time the two characters meet. If you read book one first, you would know Luzie is in cold sleep, but never know specifically when or if Sassinak meets her as you read book two.

This is another one of those stories that are beautifully complicated up until the end, which I why I won’t write a synopsis. It has many unexplained events that are revealed, and seemingly unconnected events joined. Excitement and imagination of where the story is going pulls you through to the end of Generation Warriors that nicely wraps up the story. A rare sci-fi treat.
